In addition to being one of the most iconic blockbusters of all time, Steven Spielberg's Jaws also plays host to an all-timer one-liner, when police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) tells Quint (Robert Shaw), "You're gonna need a bigger boat," after his first major encounter with the shark.

Yet the line didn't originate from the mind of co-writer Carl Gottlieb during his extensive re-writes of the original script - it was actually inspired by the events of the production itself.

The shoot had a barge which contained all of the film equipment and catering provisions, which was also accompanied by a smaller support boat that was clearly too miniscule to get the job done.

And so, "you're gonna need a bigger boat" was born, being frequently spoken among the film's crew. In Gottlieb's own words:

"[Richard] Zanuck and [David] Brown were very stingy producers, so everyone kept telling them, 'You're gonna need a bigger boat.' It became a catchphrase for anytime anything went wrong - if lunch was late or the swells were rocking the camera, someone would say, 'You're gonna need a bigger boat.'"

As a result, Scheider kept ad-libbing the one-liner during filming, much to Spielberg's annoyance. However, during the editing process Spielberg felt that its utterance fit perfectly in one single scene, and so, an indelible movie moment was born. Gottlieb added:

"It was so appropriate and so real and it came at the right moment, thanks to Verna Field's editing."
