10 Movie Scenes That Went Completely Over The Top

Liam Neeson Rages Out in Darkman
Universal Pictures

Oddly, the most comic book-like director Sam Raimi ever got was a film with no source material. Frustrated with his inability to secure the rights to The Shadow - a 1940s radio character voiced by Orson Welles - Raimi and his brothers set out to create their own comic hero origin story. Everything you later see in Spider-Man is present in Darkman, literally. The scene in which Spidey beats the mugger who killed his uncle is pretty much shot for shot the scene in which Liam Neeson's Peyton Westlake is beaten by the mafia.

Once Westlake is burned beyond recognition and impervious to pain, he goes on a revenge spree, imitating his killers with artificial skin and turning them against each other. There are plenty of zany moments, most dealing with Westlake's homicidal glee, but the best is when he tries to be normal.

After perfecting his skin for up to 99 minutes in the sunlight before it melts, he starts courting his former fiance, taking her to the amusement park. He falls into an argument with a carny before breaking his hand, but Raimi shoots the entire event with all the flare and energy of a panel of a Tales from the Crypt comic - much the way Creepshow did a decade previous.

Kenny Hedges is carbon-based. So I suppose a simple top 5 in no order will do: Halloween, Crimes and Misdemeanors, L.A. Confidential, Billy Liar, Blow Out He has his own website - thefilmreal.com - and is always looking for new writers with differing views to broaden the discussion.
