Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) is known for many things, but perhaps nothing more bizarre than his random decision to jog his way across the United States.

Though much of the resulting running montage was very clearly filmed with Tom Hanks himself, for most shots in which the actor's face isn't seen, duties were actually handed off to his younger brother, Jim Hanks.

Given that the montage shows Forrest running around a diverse number of locales, it was likely a practical decision to have the second-unit film these shots with Jim Hanks without needing to take precious time out of his older brother's schedule.

As for why Tom's brother got the part? In addition to bearing a strong resemblance to his brother, Jim mastered Tom's unique running style like nobody else. He said, "Tom had other doubles, but they couldn't do the run...That's a stupid Hanks thing."

Jim Hanks has also doubled as the voice of Sheriff Woody in peripheral Toy Story media - namely video games and short films - carving out a neat niche for himself in the process.
