2010's Tron: Legacy performed relatively modestly at the box office for its price tag - making $400 million against a $170 million budget - but with Disney having already announced plans for a third film, fans have remained vocally hopeful ever since.

By April 2011 the script for Tron 3 was being written, with director Joseph Kosinski expected to return alongside Legacy's stars Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Bruce Boxleitner, and Cillian Murphy (who made a cameo appearance in the film).

Shooting was originally planned to begin in 2014 before being pushed back a year, and then indefinitely suspended by Disney in May 2015, reportedly due to the massive box office underperformance of Tomorrowland.

In March 2017, it was reignited as a standalone sequel, with Jared Leto confirmed to be playing a new character called Ares, and in August 2020 Garth Davis was announced to be replacing Kosinski as director.

The last major update on the project came last March, when Leto said Tron 3 was "getting closer and closer," but given the colossal budget that the movie would require, and how unlikely it'd be to turn a major profit theatrically, it's tough to believe it'll ever actually get made.
