10 Movie Sequels Stuck In Production Hell

8. Friday The 13th: Part 13

Despite 2009's Friday the 13th reboot turning a strong profit at the box office, a quick-and-dirty glut of sequels never materialised for several reasons.

First and foremost, studios Paramount and New Line Cinema failed to agree on commercial terms for future films, and though Paramount later gained sole film rights to the IP, plans for a found footage Friday the 13th movie stalled for years without going into production.

Delays were commonplace as writers and directors came and went, and a planned second reboot was ultimately cancelled in early 2017, before the rights to Friday the 13th reverted back to New Line/Warner Bros.

The biggest hurdle was yet to come, though, when the original film's writer, Victor Miller, initiated a lawsuit against producer Sean S. Cunningham over the rights to the franchise.

In September 2018 Miller won the lawsuit, and a month later LeBron James was said to be producing a prequel film.

But over four years later, we've still not had Jason Voorhees back on the big screen, and last October it was announced that a prequel series, Crystal Lake, was instead being produced by Miller and Hannibal's Brian Fuller.

While there's every possibility the TV show is worthwhile, there's something about watching a Friday the 13th movie on the big screen, and it's absolutely baffling that so much money has been left on the table by depriving audiences of this for almost 15 years.

In an era where horror is thriving theatrically, and the recent Halloween trilogy grossed almost $500 million combined, it's ridiculous that Jason hasn't had a cinematic comeback, and seemingly won't anytime soon.
