2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was one of the biggest box office surprises of the last decade, for despite releasing against Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it managed to gross an astonishing $962.5 million worldwide.

A sequel was fast-tracked into production, with 2019's Jumanji: The Next Level enjoying a similar level of success and netting more than $800 million globally.

Another sequel was then quickly greenlit and expected to land in cinemas by 2021 or 2022 at the latest, but then COVID happened and brought large swaths of the film industry to a standstill.

And while the pandemic stalled the sequel's momentum, the biggest issue facing Jumanji 4's production was actually Dwayne Johnson's schedule.

Since the last Jumanji movie, Johnson has been kept perpetually busy with Jungle Cruise, Red Notice, DC League of Super Pets, Black Adam, upcoming Amazon action film Red One, and his Young Rock TV series.

Though Johnson's schedule looks to be freeing up since Black Adam underperformed at the box office, the man has so many other potential projects on the horizon - namely two Red Notice sequels planned to be shot back-to-back - that it might simply be too difficult to have the schedules of Jumanji's A-list cast coincide.

This isn't to say that it won't happen eventually, but given that The Next Level ended on quite the tantalising setup for a fourth film, it'd be smart to strike while the iron is still hot - or still warm, at least.
