10 Movie Sequels Stuck In Production Hell

9. Beetlejuice 2

A Beetlejuice sequel has been in some stage of development on and off for thirty years. As far back as 1990, Mars Attacks!'s Jonathan Gems penned a bonkers surfing-themed sequel script, Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Depending on who you ask, this was either designed to be so off-the-wall that it discouraged the studio from more sequel talk, or was a project that Tim Burton and Michael Keaton were raring to go with before all their time was taken up by the Caped Crusader.

Later in the 90s it was almost a writing gig for Kevin Smith, before the 2000s saw Pride And Prejudice And Zombies writer Seth Grahame-Smith take on the freelance bio-exorcist alongside working with Burton on Dark Shadows.

In 2015 it seemed like things were finally in motion with Beetlejuice 2. Grahame-Smith said that he had completed his script and original star Winona Ryder, her career once again in ascendance having signed on for Stranger Things, appeared to announce that the film was in active development.

A further writer, Runaways's Mike Vukadinovich, did a rewrite in 2017 with eyes on going into production that year for a release in time for the original movie's anniversary in 2018. But it's all gone quiet on the calypso-loving ghost front since then.

While promoting Dumbo last year, both Burton and Keaton, working together for the first time since the 90s, were asked about the ghostly sequel with the director answering "I doubt it" when questioned on whether we would be likely to see it any time soon.

In the meantime, fans will be left just to thrice chant "Beetlejuice 2" in the hope of magically summoning up a sequel.
