10 Movie Sequels Stuck In Production Hell
8. Disenchanted
Despite lightly sending up the fairytale formula of the studio that produced it, Disney's Enchanted wrapped everything up neatly in a time-honoured happily ever after fashion. Not that that ever stopped the studio behind The Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea from trying to milk a little more money from their fairytale cash cows.
A sequel was proposed as far back as 2010 with The Proposal and 27 Dresses's Anne Fletcher attached to direct and Amy Adams and the rest of the cast set to return. A script, titled Disenchanted, was being written in the mid-2010s with the attachment of Shrek 2 writers J. David Stem and David N. Weiss suggesting a doubling down on satirising the Disney back catalogue.
With a new director in the form of Hairspray and Rock Of Ages's Adam Shankman, a shooting date was eventually set for the summer of 2017, a decade after the original film's release. And then nothing.
Periodic updates on Disenchanted have perpetually announced that the script is "nearly" completed to Disney's satisfaction, but, as the movie is a musical and is said to feature more original songs than the first Enchanted, nailing down the script may be only the first stage of a successful writing process.
Composer Alan Menken, the man behind many 90s Disney hits who also picked up three original song Oscar nominations for the first Enchanted, noted last May that the writers are "still trying to get the script right" and Disney hasn't actually officially green-lit Disenchanted yet.
