The Master And Commander sequel doesn't just write itself, it's already been written... kind of.

The original 2003 sea-faring epic took its inspiration from the Aubrey-Maturin book series by Patrick O'Brian. The adaptation was met with widespread acclaim and adoration from fans, even managing to land itself eight Academy Award nominations and two wins for its trouble.

With this success, and so much unused material still left to explore from the books, fans were enamoured with the idea of a sequel. Despite this untapped gold mine of literary brilliance, plans to continue the story are apparently not on the table.

The major reason for this seems to be entirely box office related. The film's director, Peter Weir, confirmed as much when he said that while the movie did “well-ish” financially, it wasn't enough to merit spending another $150 million on a sequel.

It's such a shame, since Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany had such great chemistry together. Seeing the two continue to appear alongside each other, performing such wonderful material, could have made this a truly prestigious film franchise.
