10 Movie Sequels That Changed Their Franchise's Genre

4. Chronicles Of Riddick - Horror To Sci-Fi Action

if you were a lover of genre fiction in the early 2000's, then you more than likely know about Vin Diesel, and particularly, Pitch Black. A fun, legit frightening sci-fi horror movie about a bunch of people trapped on a planet inhabited by monsters who only come out at night. The film played like a lovecraftian horror story, just without the racism, sexism, homophobia - Lovecraft was not nice, is what we're trying to convey here.

So when a sequel was announced for this wonderfully creative horror film, audiences were on tenterhooks, wondering what they were going to do to top themselves for round two. Those audiences probably didn't expect Vin Diesel to be one of the only cast members to stay on the project, and for the sequel to go from hard science fiction horror story, to science fantasy epic adventure.

And the craziest part of all of it is that it actually kinda worked. Sure it definitely took itself way too seriously at times, and Vin Diesel sometimes sounded like he just got out of bed, but the majority of it holds up, and feels like a natural sequel to the original.
