10 Movie Sequels That Changed Their Franchise's Genre

2. Aliens - Horror To Action

Easily the most famous example of switching gears into a different genre for its sequel is James Cameron's Aliens. Taking over for Ridley Scott for the sequel to his groundbreaking horror movie Alien, Aliens takes what that movie built, and builds on top of it until it becomes something new and 17 flavors of awesome.

Aliens should be taught in classes for how to seamlessly transition from one film into its sequel, especially if the sequel takes place in a different genre - in this case being sci-fi horror to sci-fi action. All of the core elements of the first film make it into Aliens, but this time expanded in such a way that it being more of an action film this time only feels natural.

After all, one Alien makes it a horror movie, multiple Aliens make it a short movie, if Ripley doesn't have more guns and people with those guns to help her out. Sure she ultimately has to fix everything, since the soldier boys turn out to be hilariously useless when push comes to shove, but that's beside the point.
