Sometimes, bringing in a new writer for a sequel can be a breath of fresh air. They bring in new ideas while never losing sight of the core themes and values that should be present. Other times, it's a sign that a movie is heading for the bargain bins.

Mean Girls 2 fits nicely in to the latter category. Tina Fey weaves her wit and comedy throughout the original, which is genuinely funny, even if you aren't a 16-year-old high-schooler engaged in clique warfare. The dialogue is also sincere and stellar acting from the whole cast result in a timeless coming of age movie that remains a staple at sleepovers, and a must watch every October 3rd.

Fey's absence is sorely missed in the sequel. It doesn't even feel like a sequel, more of a shoddy attempt at a remake with a new cast and a reduced budget. It replaces the clever comedy with toilet humour and gross-out gags, which struggle to raise even a smirk. The plot retreads the first film in a much less engaging way, and it fails to make any reasonable additions to the Mean Girls Cinematic Universe. If that even exists.
