It cannot be overstated how significant Halloween (1978) is, and it has established a legacy of being one of the most important films in horror, and cinema as a whole. It is the perfect slasher movie, and Michael Myers is an icon.

There have been countless sequels to the original, a Rob Zombie reboot, and we're currently in the season of another reboot trilogy which, for the most part, does a good job of continuing the tale of Myers and Laurie Strode. The current reboots serve as direct continuations of the 1978 original, and completely omit the plot of the sequels.

The sequels of course began with Halloween II, releasing a couple years after audiences were first introduced to The Shape. It begins right where the last left off, and sees Myers stalking Laurie Strode to a local hospital, with Dr. Loomis in hot pursuit. It's eventually revealed that Michael and Laurie are in fact siblings, and the Michael may have ties to the occult, granting him supernatural abilities. Why did they have to make it so complicated?

It's messy. The sequel lacks the suspense and restraint the original had. It ups the violence and doubles the kill count, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. It seems to misinterpret everything that made the original so good, while introducing plot threads that detract from the mystery of Michael Myers. We don't know anything about him, and it should have been kept that way.

Subsequent sequels doubled down on these new plot lines and expanded them further, resulting in sequels that are even worse than this one. Whoever's idea it was to ignore all but the 1978 film for the 2018 reboot, Halloween fans owe them big time.
