Another planned project that has flipped from sequel to reboot and back again is the fifth instalment of DreamWorks’ flagship franchise Shrek. Since the internet hasn’t allowed the beloved ogre to rest peacefully since his apparent ‘final chapter’ in 2010, it’s only natural that studio execs would want to cash in on the internet’s strange obsession, in the form of a fifth film.

What might complicate matters is just who those studio execs are.

In 2016, DreamWorks Animation was bought by NBCUniversal, owners of Illumination Studios, of Minions fame. As of the last major update in 2018, the film is in the hands of Illumination’s Chris Meledandri, who offered a rather unclear account of the plan, suggesting that the film would be a reboot, but might not ignore the series’ continuity, and would include the original core voice cast.

While Jeffrey Katzenberg, former DreamWorks CEO, announced a five-part story around the release of Shrek 2, by the time of the fourth film’s development, the creative team realised that the story was best brought to a close there. Nevertheless, Meledandri and co. intend to reopen it, although we haven’t seen much progress in the last four years.
