10 Movie Sequels That'll Definitely Make You Angry

7. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

By no means a good movie in the traditional sense, Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 film adaption of Mortal Kombat is a very enjoyable time. Inspired by the first two titles in the franchise, its simple but engaging storyline, passable acting, solid pacing, and faithful yet relatively grounded action scenes lived up to – if not exceeded – fan expectations.

The forest scene involving Johnny Cage and Scorpion is an obvious highlight, as is Sonya Blade facing off against Kano. Despite its many flaws, it’s still widely hailed as one of the best video game movies of all time.

On the other hand, 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is unanimously considered one of the worst, and for good reason. It’s a textbook case of why bigger doesn’t always mean better, as its larger budget and narrative scope led to many downgrades. Specifically, the plot was absurdly convoluted and cheesy, the acting was correspondingly over-the-top, and the CGI/effects looked cheaper because they were so overblown (especially the concluding animalities, which have become meme royalty in recent years).

Not even childhood nostalgia can make up for its horridness, so let’s just hope that Simon McQuoid’s upcoming reboot can return Mortal Kombat to its former live-action glory.
