It's not often that the fifth instalment of a franchise is by far and away the best, but in 2011, Fast Five proved that this was possible.

Up until this point, the Fast and Furious series had consistently delivered average-to-poor movies, with a decent first, terrible second and third, and a watchable fourth. A big issue was that the series had an identity problem; it didn't know whether it wanted to be about neon-coloured cars and street racing, or gangs, crime, explosions and undercover cops, and a constantly-shifting cast didn't help.

2009's Fast and Furious made some progress towards rectifying these issues, but it wasn't until Fast Five that the series truly found its footing.

The five-quel veered away from the street racing of its predecessors and went into full-on action-heist territory, complete with phenomenal stunt sequences, an insanely likeable squad of heroes, and an inspired casting choice in The Rock's Luke Hobbs.

As a result, the franchise's worldwide appeal skyrocketed, and the series has gone from strength-to-strength since. Fast Five is the movie that changed everything, so it's not surprising to see how much higher its Rotten Tomatoes score is than the first four.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
