It's hard to think of Trainspotting and not think of Iggy Pop's fantastic Lust For Life right along with it. It was a huge part of the promotional campaign, and a selling point for the film's fantastic soundtrack. Brian Eno, Blur, New Order, Pulp, Elastica, and Lou Reed among others would also appear on the soundtrack, which took off with fans and sold like hotcakes.

How popular was the compilation? Enough so that a second "soundtrack" was released later, including songs that didn't make the first album but were in the film, plus songs cut from the final film or that its creators used as inspiration during the filmmaking process.

The merits of the second soundtrack can be debated - is it really a soundtrack if half the songs weren't in the movie? - but in regards to the original album, there's no question that it's a stellar compilation, and one that had huge impact on its audience. It would later be ranked in the top ten soundtracks of all time by Vanity Fair.
