While this venture has not been confirmed in any concrete manner, the magnitude of the rumblings surrounding it merit inclusion on this list.

Johnny Depp and Disney are estranged following the complete breakdown of their professional relationship in the wake of his tumultuous legal battles with his ex-wife Amber Heard. As such, fans will likely never see Depp return to what is arguably his most celebrated role: that of Pirates of the Caribbean's legendary lead protagonist, Captain Jack Sparrow.

While the demise of such an immortal character is devastating news for the legions of followers that the Pirates movies have amassed, producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared some exciting news in an interview with The Sunday Times, that softened the blow somewhat. A script is in development for two further movies - one is reportedly a reboot of the franchise, while the other is a "brand new wholly original tale."

What's more, talks are apparently ongoing with a potential new star - Harley Quinn herself, Margot Robbie. The concept of a female-led Pirates flick is tantalizing in and of itself, but the idea of Robbie - one of the most charismatic and influential stars in the world today - in the lead role is thrilling.

While the franchise is likely to remain stuck in development hell for the foreseeable future, the foundations are being laid for what is likely to be an electrifying return for one of Disney's most celebrated film franchises.
