10 Movie Spinoffs You Didn't Know Were Coming
6. The Gray Man Spinoff
The Russo brothers have had a rough time post-Endgame. Cherry received lukewarm reviews despite Tom Holland's best efforts, and their latest offering, The Gray Man, has been panned by the majority of critics as a thoroughly underwhelming action flick. As one of the unfortunate souls who suffered through Netflix's frightfully predictable "thriller", this writer can only scratch his head in sheer bemusement at the news of Netflix's plans to develop it into a franchise.
The blockbuster outing starred the meteorically popular Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, but was uninspired, dull, and clichéd to the hilt - to put it mildly. The performances of the cast (which also features A-listers Ana de Armas and Billy Bob Thornton) were applauded as one of the lone bright spots in an otherwise drab attempt at a nerve-wracking game of cat and mouse.
Therefore, the news that Netflix has commissioned a sequel starring Gosling, in addition to an unconnected spinoff, is almost laughable. While Gosling's outing will inevitably be another tired and follow-up, little in the way of detail has been given regarding The Gray Man's spinoff, save for the fact that it will focus on a "different element" of the film's universe.
Still, with Deadpool writers Rhett Rheese and Paul Wernick rumored to be taking charge of the script, any attempt at a spinoff can hopefully avoid some of the more notable blunders of its dreary predecessor.
