10 Movie Titles With Double Meanings Everyone Missed

4. Easy A

There’s actually a lot going on with Easy A’s title, with its meaning going in a fair few different directions, especially if you’re prepared to squint a little.

First off, the movie is clearly a modern retelling of The Scarlet Letter, something it references itself several times. The Nathaniel Hawthorne novel sees a woman accused of adultery branded with a scarlet A for all to see; Olive also wears this A, though out of choice, and this links to the movie’s first meaning.

An easy A is typically a class you can pass without much difficulty; for Olive, she picks up her reputation through simple deception. She also pretends to be an easy lay, a pun on the title, which brings another angle into it.

She gets her cool reputation (at least it starts off cool), very easily; essentially this is an easy a on her scorecard with the cool kids. Though if cool kids kept scorecards, they probably wouldn’t be the cool kids.

This in turn though, makes her seem easy, something which she neither is nor was, and in that case the A becomes a pun for lay and a representation of The Scarlet Letter.
