10 Movie Trailer Cliches Everyone Is Tired Of
5. Literally Spoiling The Movie
One of the most common complaints about film trailers is that they simply give too damn much away, and unfortunately, industry studies do back up that your most casual filmgoer wants to know pretty much everything about a film before they splurge their cash on going to see it.
The result is film trailers that frequently give away most of the big reveals and money shots for free, out of fear that they won't be able to lure audiences in otherwise.
Examples: No franchise has been more guilty of this than Terminator, with Terminator 2's trailers straight-up spoiling that Arnie was a benevolent robot this time, Terminator Salvation giving way the mid-film revelation that Marcus (Sam Worthington) is a human-android hybrid, and Terminator Genisys spoiling that John Connor (Jason Clarke) gets turned into a Terminator himself.
Other big offenders include Cast Away basically giving away the entire plot, Speed revealing the fate of the hostages, Goldeneye spoiling that 006 (Sean Bean) faked his death, Batman v Superman showing Doomsday and Wonder Woman's (Gal Gadot) arrivals, and so many, many more.
