10 Movie Trailers That Totally Misled Audiences

7. Pan's Labyrinth

What The Trailer Says: Pan's Labyrinth is a visually gorgeous fantasy that tells the tale of a young girl who visits a mystical fantasy land, learning a lot about herself and meeting lots of weird and wonderful creatures in the process! Fun! Adventure! The Truth: Though it's true that Pan's Labyrinth is visually stunning - c'mon, it's Guillermo del Toro! - that's about the only thing the trailer told the truth about. The film is, in fact, an allegory about the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War, with the protagonist using her imagination as a means of escapism. It also featured a scene in which a man has a broken bottle shoved in his face, so if you want to make sure you traumatise your children, this one's a pretty safe bet. Granted, the "15" rating should make it clear that this isn't come fluffy fantasy film, but the scaled-back "suitable for all" trailers nevertheless made the film appeal to children, which is pretty crass when you think about it.
