10 Movie Trailers That Totally Misled Audiences

6. Lost In Translation

What The Trailer Says: This is quirky comedy from Sofia Coppola that has Bill Murray and Scarlet Johansson playing Americans suffering from culture shock in Japan. This is the prime source of the humour, and our expectation is that the two will probably end up hooking up and falling in love at the end. The Truth: Though it milks some light laughs out of the culture clash, these are the broadest moments in what is otherwise a relatively straight-faced existential drama, as the two leads try to find some semblance of meaning in their crumbling personal lives. The humour stays mostly dry, and the ending steers away from the expected happy climax towards something a lot more cryptic and vague (Murray whispers something in her ear that we never hear). Just because Bill Murray's in it, that evidently doesn't mean it's a zany laugh riot like many expected (and the trailers clearly took advantage of).
