10 Movie Trailers That Totally Trolled Audiences

1. Annapolis

Don't feel bad if you don't remember this 2006 James Franco-starring drama, which on the basis of its trailers appeared to be a war film centered on the experiences of a young Navy recruit (Franco) making his way through basic training.

Despite the trailer focusing on harsh boot camp sequences, sexy shots of aircraft carriers, jets and even explosions, most of the training sequences are shoved into the first 20-or-so minutes of the movie, and Annapolis is for the most part a boxing film.

Though the trailers only included a single errant shot of people sparring, the film is as much about boxing as it is the Navy, culminating in a match between Franco and his rival, played by Tyrese Gibson.

Much of the aforementioned Naval imagery is just stock footage included in the trailer to misrepresent the film, so naturally many expecting to see an action-packed film about the toils of shipping off were left dejected when they realised they were in for a sports movie instead.

Despite huge critical scorn and a poor box office performance, however, Annapolis somehow sold 4 million copies on DVD, even after the cat was firmly out of the bag re: its manipulative marketing trick. Impressive.
