While the Saw franchise is known now for its elaborate twists as much as it is its gory traps, its first (and arguably best) rug-pulling moment was surprisingly simple.

The movie's now-iconic set up of two men chained in a bathroom, with a dead body in the middle and an escape only accessible by chopping off a foot, was perfect for the low-budget horror, and it made for a twist that seems so obvious in hindsight.

All the way through it's made clear that John Kramer - aka Jigsaw - is responsible for the current situation, with the movie dedicating a sub-story to the detectives hunting the killer down in his lair away from the bathroom trap.

It turns out the trail they've been following is cold though, and Jigsaw is actually observing his current game from the inside. At the end it's established the dead body wasn't dead at all, but the murderer himself keeping a close eye on his subjects.
