10 Movie Villain Twists Everyone Hated

7. McHale - Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull

During the 1980's few characters captured imaginiations and made money like Indiana Jones. From the sleeper hit of Raiders of the Lost Ark, through the not so kid friendly Temple of Doom to The Last Crusade the saga delivered thrills, spills and some great twists. Kingdom of The Crystal Skull couldn't miss...until it did!

This movie has a lot of flaws, but few hurt it more than the asinine way Ray Winstone's George McHale plays out. He betrays Indy right out the gate, joining Spalko and the Russians before the "twist". That he is actually a double agent for the CIA.

It makes sense, Indy immediately trusts and then... McHale is still a bad guy and helping the Russians because of his debt issues. This dizzying set of about faces might have worked, had Ray Winstone not been cast in the role.

Winstone is great at what he does, British tough guys who don't take any s*** from anyone, or tortured middle aged guys at odds with their past. McHale isn't really any of these... he's a weasel character and Winstone couldn't pull it off.

Winstone is quoted as saying he was responsible for suggesting the "CIA Double Agent" line, and it's easy to see Spielberg accommodating it to help his performance... only it didn't and left the movie muddled, which in addition to the bad casting of Shia LaBeouf and sheer ludicrousness of some of the script has meant we're only now getting an opportunity for one last adventure with Dr. Jones.
