10 Movie Villain Twists Everyone Hated

6. Admiral Marcus - Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness had two twist villains, one was very welcome and very expected... the other downright stupid and most unwelcome.

As soon as he was cast, it was obvious that Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing Khan. When his character was being called John Harrison there was never any doubt of his real identity amongst fans.

However, the dumb twist in this movie comes by making Admiral Marcus, a respected member of Star Fleet, father of Carol Marcus a crazed villain intent on starting a war between the Federation and the Klingons. Not only is he betraying his people, but seems willing to put his love for a super-destroyer ahead of the life of his own daughter.

What should have been a simple re-tread of Khan's origins, him being duplicitous and wanting to take charge of the Enterprise became a convoluted plot around his people being put into torpedoes that would start the war by Marcus. Fans wanted to see Kirk against Khan, not against his own Admiral and would be father in law. However nice it was to see Peter Weller in a big movie again, this twist wasn't worth it.

Star Trek has never needed twists of this type, particularly on the big screen and this one played a big part in why the movies have had mixed fortunes. Star Trek Beyond moved away from remaking of previous movies towards the TV show but the franchise hasn't quite recovered. Perhaps the Tarantino version can do a twist right... that's if we ever get to see it.
