10 Movie Villain ‘Twists’ We Saw Coming A Mile Off
10. Obadiah Stane - Iron Man
For all its MCU groundwork-laying and Robert Downey Jr. wise-cracking, Iron Man was pretty by-the-numbers. Of course, Marvel now have their own formula (which is in need of a bit of a shake up), but the first outing for Tony Stark shared much of the superhero tropes with many earlier entries in the genre. Once the opening, cave-set soirée is over the only thing really unique about the film is that it's about millionaire superhero who doesn't spend all his time moping.
That predictability passes over to what feels like the movie's big villain reveal twist. We say "feels like" because it seems strange that director Jon Favreau and the rest of the guys at Marvel would try and dupe us about the true motives of Jeff Bridges Obadiah Stane, Tony's mentor, when he just looks so sinister. In the comics a Marvel version of Lex Luthor, even not knowing his ultimate fate as the Iron Monger (remember when all Iron Man fought was other guys in suits?) even to audiences new to the character there was little question that Bridges would be chewing scenery by the final act.
It's was a little surprising that Stane was the one behind Stark's kidnap (making him the accidental creator of Iron Man), but with a supposedly loving mentor spent most of his time grumpy at Tony, his villainous intentions were fully clear.
