10 Movie Villains Obsessed With Immortality

7. Dr. Charles Conway - The Unearthly (1957)

The Unearthly is a decidedly B horror flick, as evinced by its casting of Plan 9 from Outer Space's Tor Johnson. Much of the film is the hackneyed fare: playing God, anger at the local scientific community and world at large, and the mad doctor's murder at the hands of his monster.

That said, Dr. Conway is played by the immortal (pun intended) John Carradine of Stagecoach and many other John Ford masterpieces - and his performance here does save the film. It also features Allison Hayes, a year before Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.

The mentally ill come to the doctor for treatment, and they are unwittingly subjected to his botched experiments that leave them deformed. What finally makes the film stand out is its ambiguous ending: police discover a hidden room full these failed abominations. Or are they? The police question if perhaps they were successfully made immortal, but at a grave cost.
