10 Movie Villains Who Had Warts On Their Souls

9. Marathon Man: The White Angel

In a list of memorably inhuman movie monsters, you just knew a Nazi or two would have to put in an appearance.

Hitler's army of onscreen fascists run the gamut from sadistic psychos to more banal, though no less terrifying, rank-and-file murderers. That said, a lot of movie Nazis such as the villains of the classic adventure series Indiana Jones are cartoony caricatures enamoured with their dear leader and reduced to over-the-top self-parody.

Not so in 1976's tense, unrelenting paranoid thriller Marathon Man.

A brutal suspense classic, this film from Midnight Cowboy director John Schlesinger is another bleak tale from his oeuvre. The movie sees an innocent Dustin Hoffman pursued by the White Angel, a villain so atrocious he makes most movie Nazis look anodyne in comparison.

A terrifyingly mild mannered and measured screen presence, Dr Christian Szell is an unrepentant war criminal who not only never faced any justice for his crimes against humanity, but doubled down on his evil deeds after the war.

Not only does the film see him torturing an innocent man by drilling into his perfectly healthy tooth, but viewers are even informed that he stole countless gold teeth by promising concentration camp inhabitants safety in exchange for the fillings, only to leave them to die anyway.
