10. Patchs Critics Patch Adams
The fact that the real-life inspiration behind Patch Adams hated the film should tell you all you need to know about it. Yes, he was slightly unorthodox as a doctor, but the minds behind the movie chose to ramp this up to 11 because, well, Robin Williams. The role was adapted to cram in as much of he-with-the-hairy-arms shtick as possible, and this resulted in some pretty strange judgements by the film. Basically, everyone whos seen as in any way straight and official are seen as buzzkills to Patchs madcap techniques. Were supposed to sympathise with him because hes a non-conformist, and being yourself is more important than bowing to peer pressure. Well, in most surroundings Id agree, but not in a bloody hospital. Throughout the film Patch commits shocking oversights such as stealing from the hospital and practicing without a license, but were still expected to root for him anyway. Along with this, his stuffy roommate complains that he seems to get good marks despite barely studying. Usually Id slap Patch on the back and tell him well done for this, but again, hes a freaking doctor we never see him study in the film and though he appears to flying by the seat of his pants throughout, it would only take one oversight in his slapdash approach and boom, hes got a death on his hands. So really, Im more on the side of the staff trying to put Patch down, because healing with humour is no effective substitute for actually, yknow, regular healing, no matter how many clown noses you wear. The real-life Patch Adams understood this, but strangely, the scriptwriters didnt.
