10 Movie Villains Who Were Fatally Miscast
8. Cate Blanchett - Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull
This one is pretty much in the same category as Julianne Moore in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Cate Blanchett is a two-time Oscar winner who does serious, character-driven work, not nonsensical villains like this.
Irina Spalko, a hammy Soviet agent, was a dreadful antagonist in a dire movie and any actress would've struggled to make her engaging, but it's still baffling that Blanchett was cast. Once again, a more over-the-top actress was needed; for example, Helena Bonham Carter could definitely have done some good stuff here.
Unfortunately, poor Cate Blanchett just couldn't quite pull it together on this occasion and her performance mainly consisted of a vaguely sinister (and poorly-done) Russian accent and nothing else. This is probably the worst performance of her career.
Blanchett fell into a similar trap with 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, in which she felt out-of-place as another over-the-top antagonist.
