10 Movie Villains Who Won AFTER They Died

2. John Doe - Seven

Batman Begins Ra S Al Ghul Liam Neeson
New Line Cinema

Seven (1995) is a truly disturbing psychological crime thriller and, whilst the killer sits at its core, it is actually the unspoken respect between Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt) and Detective Lieutenant William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) that drives it.

Throughout the film, Mills and Somerset are one step behind a killer whose victims are killed according to the seven deadly sins. They encounter gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, and pride, but are struck when a man claiming to be the killer, John Doe (Kevin Spacey) walks into their precinct, covered in blood, without there having been a sixth or seventh victim.

When Doe offers to take them to the last victims, Somerset is doubtful, but Mills agrees. Driving to an open field, Somerset receives a box from a delivery van driver whilst Doe taunts Mills, referring to his envy over Mills's relationship with his wife, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), whom he reveals was pregnant. Doe claims that Tracy's head is in the box and, even though Somerset instructs Mills not to come and look, his silence confirms to Mills that this is true. Mills shoots Doe in rage, thus completing Doe's psychopathic scheme for him: Doe had killed Tracy out of envy and Mills kills Doe out of wrath.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
