Ruthless drill instructor, Hartman is in charge of training a group of new boot camp recruits in Parris Island, South Carolina during the Vietnam War. These include the overweight and naive Leonard Lawrence, nicknamed "Gomer Pyle" by Hartman, after the character from the Andy Griffith show.

When Pyle struggles with basic training, Hartman pairs him with another recruit, who helps him start to improve. However, after cruelly punishing the whole platoon apart from Pyle to turn them against him when he finds a contraband doughnut in Pyle’s locker, Hartman instigates a change in the young recruit.

Following this, Pyle turns into a model soldier, particularly excelling at marksmanship, although showing signs of suffering a mental breakdown.

The recruits graduate and receive their Military assignments, with Pyle assigned to Infantry. On the final night on the Island, he wakes the platoon and Hartman by loudly carrying out drill commands. Hartman confronts him and orders him to give up his rifle, but in an ironic turn of events, Hartman’s success in turning Pyle into a killer backfires, when Pyle shoots him dead before committing suicide.
