Featuring two phenomenal performances in Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams and one of the most affecting scripts of the 2010s, Manchester By The Sea tells the story of a deeply depressed, directionless man who's called back home after the death of his brother, and must now care for his estranged nephew.

Affleck stars as janitor Lee Chandler in an Oscar-winning role, and with the script creates the unforgettable image of man burdened with the past - in which his actions inadvertently led to the deaths of his three children and the loss of his marriage - and unable to commit to a future with the responsibilities of parenthood.

Throughout the film, Lee mourns his marriage, children, and his brother, but through his nephew and a fraught reunion with his ex-wife is able to finally find a small sense of closure and fragile peace over his past.

Unlike many movies on this list, Manchester By The Sea refuses to end with a clear-cut image of happily ever after, instead opting for a more realistic portrayal of grief that never truly disappears, but can be managed with the help of family, friends, and acceptance, no matter how hard it may seem.
