The first in Krzysztof Kieślowski's gorgeous and unforgettable Three Colours trilogy, Blue is all about the concept of emotional liberty, focussing on Juliette Binoche's recent widow Julie as she mourns the death of her husband and young daughter and decides to cut herself off from the world.

Driven to desperation and overcome with such powerful grief you can almost feel it emanating off the screen, Blue follows Julie as she destroys mementos from her past, pushes her friends and her family away, and accepts her fate as an anonymous loner who wants nothing to do with anything or anyone.

As dire as this may sound, though, Blue prides itself on remaining humanistic and upbeat, as Julie's attempts to leave her past behind are thwarted when she befriends a troubled neighbour and learns her composer husband's final musical score is set to be finished by his closest collaborator, with whom she falls in love.

Tragic, heartfelt and concluding with an image few will be able to shake, Blue isn't just the start of a remarkable series of movies, but also one of the most moving and honest portrayals of mourning and moving on you're ever likely to see.
