Though Casablanca is right up there with The Godfather in discussions of the greatest movies ever made, stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman weren't much feeling it while shooting the 1942 romantic drama.

Due to the film being rushed into production to capitalise on the recent Allied invasion of North Africa, Bogie, Bergman, and others in the cast had few expectations for the project.

The chaos of the shoot's early days, unaided by director Michael Curtiz's confrontational manner, prompted both leads to consider quitting the film. However, they ultimately stayed on and instead relayed their frustrations to a fellow actor, Geraldine Fitzgerald, who later revealed what they said:

"They thought the dialogue was ridiculous and the situations were unbelievable, and Ingrid was terribly upset because she said she had to portray the most beautiful woman in Europe, and no one would ever believe that."

Though Casablanca performed modestly well at the box office, it went on to become a surprise Oscar darling, winning three Oscars - Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay - while scoring five additional nominations, including a Best Actor nod for Bogart.
