10 Movies That Almost Had Much Better Endings
6. Humanity Is The Villain - I Am Legend
The Official Ending: Will Smith's Neville lives alone in New York, aside from his dog, Sam. Oh, and hoards of zombie-vampire things. Trying to find a cure for the virus that has created the monsters, he kidnaps one of their kind in an attempt to synthesise a cure. He succeeds, but not before his stronghold comes under attack from the evil infected. Helping fellow survivors Anna and Ethan escape, Neville sacrifices himself in a fiery explosion that takes out the attackers, becoming the legend of the title.
The One We Almost Got: This is probably the holy grail of alternate endings; one that is so infinitely better than the one in the finished film that it actually changes the whole meaning of the movie. It turns out the undead are only attacking Neville because they want the one of their own he's been experimenting on. That's right, Will Smith's the bad guy, a legend amongst the infected for terrorising them Bowser-style. He realises this just in time, letting his test subject go and forming some type of truce.
Why It Would Have Been Better: Do you even have to ask? The alternate ending takes a dumb film version of a highly revered novel and makes it something depressingly meditative. Expect the mooted remake to correct this massive oversight.
