10 Movies That Almost Had Much Better Endings

7. Moscow Fight Scene - World War Z

Paramount Pictures

The Official Ending: The Brad Pitt zombie epic that shocked everyone by not being a box office bomb ends its globe-hopping journey in Cardiff. Gerry, a UN investigator who suddenly becomes humanity's only hope, manages to figure out a way to become invisible to the walking dead. The film that sees zombies piling up to get into Jerusalem then gives us its final showdown, which features one lone walker, with Gerry escaping unscathed.

The One We Almost Got: The script for the adaptation of Max Brooks' beloved novel had gone through many hands in its long development, and yet made it all the way to post-production without a coherent ending. Before the low-key, sequel-baiting ending was settled on, extensive shooting had been done for a much bigger climax that saw a massive, Moscow-set skirmish. This was ultimately cut, along with various other references to global politics, including a theory that the infection began in China, in a bid to increase the film's international legs.

Why It Would Have Been Better: Fans of the book were disappointed to see an exemplar piece of zombie fiction that, like the genre at its very best, used the undead to explore social elements of our world reduced to a simplistic blockbuster. While the Moscow ending was a typical action beat, it would have been a much satisfying experience than a side-step to Wales.
