10 Movies That Almost Had Much Better Endings

3. Esther Escapes - Orphan

Warner Bros. Pictures

The Official Ending: For much of its run time Orphan is an incredibly chilling film, keeping its cards close to its chest. There's a creepy child with a murderous bent and incredibly unnerving look, but even when she's hammering nuns to death it's all in the name of building tension. Then, in its final twenty minutes, everything steps up a gear. We learn little girl Esther is actually a diminutive thirty-three year old psychopath in disguise and the whole thing devolves into a stalking killer set piece, with Vera Farmiga having to fight her adoptive daughter to the death.

The One We Almost Got: Instead of going for broke and trying to kill the witnesses at the stake of her identity, Esther simply reapplies her child make-up after the initial fight, walking calmly into the hands of the police, assumedly ready to continue with her charade and making Farmiga's mother look deranged.

Why It Would Have Been Better: Orphan would have worked much better with the psycho 'child' getting away with it (think The Omen) and unlike the official ending, it feels a lot more in keeping with the previous ninety minutes.
