10 Movies Based On A True Story You Need To Watch Before You Die

7. Milk

Schindler S List
Universal Studios

Harvey Milk is widely regarded as the most famous openly gay politicians ever elected in the United States, and his story will make it obvious to see why.

After not being open about his sexuality or his political interests until he was 40, Milk was one of many gay and bisexual men who migrated from all over the US to San Fransisco in hope of a better life and escape from discrimination.

However, despite moving into a growing gay neighbourhood known as The Castro, Milk and other homosexual men still encountered opposition wherever they went. This inspired Milk to become a gay activist and stage multiple campaigns to get into public office before winning a seat on the San Fransisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. This made Milk the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in California and the third openly gay politician in the entire US.

This leads to a tense working relationship with Dan White, who would eventually kill Milk in City Hall, along with Mayor George Moscone.

The highlight of the film is Sean Penn’s incredible portrayal of Harvey Milk and how his commitment to politics comes at the cost of those around him.
