With all the massive leaps and bounds that space travel has made over the years, it’s the story about Apollo 13 that stands out as one of the most extraordinary.
On April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 launched from the Kennedy Space Centre with the intent of becoming the third crew of astronauts to land on the moon. But two days into its mission, disaster struck as one of the oxygen tanks explodes, putting the lives of its three crew members in serious danger.
What follows is both the crew and NASA’s desperate efforts to find a way to get Apollo 13 back home in one piece, while at the same time trying to keep the crew alive as the vessel presents numerous problems along the way.
The film does an incredible job in showing the technical prowess of the NASA scientists as they troubleshoot the problems of Apollo 13’s re-entry one by one. Performances from Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton deliver on an authentic portrayal of the Apollo 13 crew as they work together to stay motivated and focused on getting home.
