In 1997, Phillip Pullman released his first novel Northern Lights, within the His Dark Materials Trilogy. In 2007, the first and only film of the franchise was produced - renamed The Golden Compass.

The movie included big stars such as Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, with the main plot focusing on a young orphan Lyra seeking to find kidnapped children in the Far North. Oh, and she has a giant warrior bear for a friend.

Although the movie became the highest grossing non-sequel of the year in the UK, there were many controversial aspects that prevented the franchise from continuing. This included Pullman's original concept surrounding the Catholic religion and too much time attempting to explore every single character ever to set foot on the pages.

BBC have since released the first season of a His Dark Materials TV show starring James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda, which has given the large novels more time to breathe in 8 one-hour episodes. It has been confirmed for it to continue for another 2 series in the future.
