10 Movies Based On Books That Should've NEVER Been Made
5. A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Lemony Snicket has written a whopping 13 books in his A Series Of Unfortunate Events collection. In 2004, the film starring Jim Carrey and Meryl Streep was released, following the lives of recently orphaned Beaudelaire children as they are put in to the care of their distant relative and eccentric old man Count Olaf whilst they simultaneously discover the mystery behind their parent's death.
To watchers of the film who were not familiar with the books, this was a success, with a well acted A-list cast and kooky comedy throughout. The intent by the production team was to finish the entire series in as short amount of movies as possible, apparent when the film combined narrative elements from the first 3 novels in under 2 hours.
However the released final cut was not loved by book fans or those working on the film, as the focus was on Carrey's performance and not on the narrative of the kids themselves.
In 2017 Netflix gained the rights for a TV series, this time with Neil Patrick Harris as the children's guardian. The spread of the books in episodic chunks received much more higher reviews and has continued for 3 seasons thus far.
