10 Movies We're Embarrassed To Admit Got Us All Choked Up

6. Star Trek Into Darkness

To be fair, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan made me far more emotional than its follow-up, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness. The difference is that for the most part, we look back fondly on Wrath of Khan, and it's generally understood that Spock's sacrifice was one of Star Trek's most important moments. Into Darkness isn't quite as beloved, so it's safe to say that their handling of the Khan storyline doesn't make Trekkies weep with any actual tears. Still, the movie does impress with a surprise twist: it is Kirk who must make the ultimate sacrifice. Yes, ultimately Kirk survives, but that still doesn't change the emotional power behind the scene in which Kirk and Spock say goodbye, perfectly mirroring Wrath of Khan down to the last "live long and prosper." It hits us because up until that point, the duo of Kirk and Spock felt invincible. "Surely, the writers behind this one wouldn't pull a Wrath of Khan and do away with a major character," we all imagined. But they did just that, and the final goodbye was handled almost perfectly, especially when we witnessed Spock's long-awaited rampage against Khan, which really should have just been the entire movie.
