5. Top Gun

Going in, we all knew Top Gun was going to... take our breath away. What we didn't all realize, however, was that this campy movie with a horrendously cheesy soundtrack was going to make us actually weep for one of the characters. You probably know who I'm referring to.

This is a man's man of a movie, focusing in on lessons that include honor, being selfless, and honoring the legacy of the ones we've lost. These are themes Tom Cruise probably hasn't come face to face with while reading a script in a long time, but he nailed it during his performance here. I can still hear him screaming "Goose" 20 years later (yes, the movie is that old). It's not easy for me to tell people that a movie like Top Gun still makes me tear up every time it gets brought up in conversation, especially around people who only pretend to have seen it (most people under the age of 30). They scoff at the idea of an 80s action movie with Tom Cruise and F14's making you have real-life emotions, but any real fan of the movie will shake their head at these millennials.
