10 Movies Everyone Thought Were DOOMED (But Became Massive Hits)
9. Ghost
It may have gone on to become one of the most successful romantic dramas of all time, but very few (even those involved with making it) ever imagined 1990's Ghost would become the iconic tale it ultimately did.
Firstly, director Jerry Zucker wasn't exactly known for his work in the dramatic genre, with his most acclaimed films up to that point being the comedies Airplane! and Top Secret! - both being directed alongside Jim Abrahams and David Zucker.
One of Ghost's stars, Demi Moore, also later admitted that she felt this comedy/love story of the ghost of a murdered man trying to save his girlfriend had the makings of either a "disaster" or something quite special (via Glamour). And screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin remembered (via Buzzfeed) a reporter being disappointed to learn he wasn't associated with the Ghost Dad movie, and people all leaving the theatre before the film previewed after a screening of Days of Thunder.
Thankfully, though, folks did soon turn up to see that preview of the movie with a compelling trailer and legendary poster, and people even ended up sitting in the aisles. From here, Ghost would eventually earn a staggering $505 million at the box office (on a $23 million budget) and win a couple of Academy Awards, becoming one of the biggest surprises of the decade.
