10 Movies Everyone Thought Were DOOMED (But Became Massive Hits)
8. The Greatest Showman
Here we have an example of a movie that seemed to be doomed based on how it initially performed at the box office.
The Greatest Showman opened to fairly average reviews and rather disappointing returns. The not-exactly-historically-accurate tale of P. T. Barnum and his circus only brought in $8 million (via BoxOfficeMojo) during its opening weekend and looked to be in for a rough ride throughout the remainder of its run.
However, this new musical just about every critic and onlooker likely felt was doomed then went and did the unthinkable.
Week after week, The Greatest Showman continued to pull in viewers. Led by the superb Hugh Jackman, alongside a terrific ensemble, the movie's catchy tunes, hugely successful sing-a-long screenings, and strong word of mouth left cinema owners with no choice but to keep it in their theatres for a whopping 219 days.
By the time it danced out of said theatres, this $84 million picture that 20th Century Fox likely feared would become quite an expensive failure had earned a ridiculous $459 million worldwide.
