10 Movies Everyone Wanted To Hate Before They Even Came Out

5. House Of Wax

Scott Pilgrim
Warner Bros.

When a remake of Roger Corman’s corny 1950’s horror House of Wax was first announced, there seemed to be no reason for this news to draw any ire from the film critics and genre fans of the world. Sure, it was another unnecessary remake of a classic horror.

But as Scream 4 noted a few years later, with everything from The Hills Have Eyes to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Omen to Pirahna being redone, the film was in pretty good company. And it’s not like the original film was a beloved property—if anything the cheesy flick could have done with a reboot, particularly when far more-loved properties such as John Carpenter’s Halloween and Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street were both slated for upcoming remakes at the time.

The problem was, unlike other disappointing horrors of the same year such as Stay Alive, House of Wax made the mistake of casting The Simple Life star/ much-maligned hotel heiress Paris Hilton in the role of “Disposable Teen Number Three”.

Whilst this may have netted the film some extra publicity, it also meant anyone who despised the air-headed heiress’ public persona had a new outlet for their ire, and the (not particularly great, but also not that awful) remake bore the brunt of this.
