Lest anyone think poor Paul Feig, the millionaire Hollywood director, was the first person to fall afoul of the Ghostbusters fandom, it’s worth noting that the 1989 follow-up to the universally loved 1984 original also had fans ready to tear apart the new team up, despite boasting the return of the entire original line up and the first film’s director.

Whatever magic Ghostbusters captured in the summer of 1984 seems impossible to replicate to the liking of the fandom or the world at large—good luck to Jason Reitman, son of the original helmer Ivan, and his attempted reboot coming this summer.

Maybe it’s the fact that horror comedy is famously tricky to pull off, maybe it was the chemistry between the cast which no one felt could be replicated—whatever the cause, even fans of the original flick were averse to the idea of a belated sequel, and like fellow 1984 comedy horror hit Gremlins, the eventual release of Ghostbusters 2 saw it slated by critics who had positively anticipated the downfall of the franchise.

Not unlike Gremlins 2, the film is lighter in tone than its predecessor and actually a lot better than its critics give it credit for, but why let that get in the way of a good mauling?
